A rare early-19th Century East India (John) Company ivory chess part-set, possibly Berhampore, one side left natural and representing the East India (John) Company, the other side stained green and representing Indian army, comprising figures riding elephants, horses camels, a pair of unmounted oxen, and soldier pawns.
King 9cm high, pawns 6cm high, (one pawn on each side missing). Sold together with a hand-written note: "These chessmen were brought from India by Capt. John Bastard, R.N. given as a present to his brother Edmund P. Bastard - whose initials are engraved on the saddle cloths of the Elephants."
